Growing for generations

The nursery is sited on the former 'Battle of Britain' airfield. Following the closure of the RAF station in 1970, the land returned to farming and the airfield fell into decline. In 1988, Dirk Houweling purchased the land and established Tangmere Airfield Nurseries - an independent family run business.

The airfield is now home to one of Europe's largest pepper nurseries with 30 hectares (equivalent to 60 football pitches) of the most modern glasshouse facilities in the UK.

In 2001, the company acquired the site in Spain allowing for year-round customer supply and has continued to thrive, with the expansion of Tangmere's state-of-the-art packing facilities and further large areas of glass.

In WWII, the Minister of Agriculture encouraged everyone to ‘Dig for Victory’ – to provide essential crops for families and neighbourhoods. The site has been regenerated but the nursery continues the traditional activity of growing and supplying fresh British produce.
