The food and farming industry came together on Sunday the 10th of June, to showcase all that British farmers deliver, as 358 farms opened their gates to the public for LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) Open Farm Sunday. It’s estimated, that over the past 13 years, more than 2.2 million people have visited a farm for LEAF Open Farm Sunday to learn what’s involved in farming and food production.
This year, Tangmere opened its gates for the third time and welcomed 1,515 visitors for a glorious sun-filled Open Farm Sunday. We had a fantastic 23% increase in visitors compared to our second year of opening in 2016.
The feedback from visitors was wonderfully positive. Mark Knight, Tangmere Crops Manager said: “We were delighted to see people of all ages, interested in visiting the glasshouses to see our peppers growing and asking our team so many questions!”
There was national media coverage for the campaign in the weeks running up to the event and Tangmere were thrilled to be featured in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. On the day, we were joined by our local radio station, Spirit FM who broadcast from 8am-1pm with live interviews throughout the show.
Highlights included our glasshouse tours, fact-finding pepper trail, seed sowing and cookery demonstrations provided by local chef Giles Thompson of The Earl of March and Jethro Carr of Kitchen Academy. Children and parents also had an opportunity to ride custom-made smoothie bikes and blend their own healthy drinks as well as try their hand at making picnic recipes with Velma Parker of the Emsworth Cookery School.
Tangmere also ran a Facebook photo competition asking visitors to capture their day and offering a prize bike for the winner. We would like to say thank you to everyone who submitted their entries; we received so many incredible photos!
We’re pleased to reveal that the winner of the photo competition was Christy Stevens with her picture taken of her daughter on the day.
Thank you to everyone involved with hosting our event; all the volunteers, sponsors and to everyone who attended and supported. Thank you also to everyone who kindly donated and helped us to raise £730 for our chosen charity: The Chichester Information Shop for Young People.
Open Farm Sunday is a nationwide event managed by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) since it began in 2006.
