Earlier this month, we shared a ‘meeting of minds’ when we welcomed Andrew Sole, stallholder at New Covent Garden Market and five chefs from Chotto Matte Restaurant in Soho to see what goes on behind the scenes with a tour of our glasshouses in Chichester.
Tangmere Airfield Nurseries has been supplying wholesale stand ‘Williams of London’ (one of the oldest businesses in New Covent Garden) with fresh British peppers for more than 20 years. Andrew and his father (themselves farmers from the fens in Cambridgeshire) take pride in supplying in excess of 80% British produce during the summer months and in knowing how and where the produce is grown.
Provenance is also something that matters to Head Chef Michael Paul of Chotto Matte when he buys ingredients at market and which inspired their visit with Andrew to Tangmere. The restaurant specialises in Nikkei cuisine; a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese food and all about quality, ingredients and flavours.
Tangmere’s General Manager, Gerard Vonk explains: “It’s a rare opportunity to all meet and talk about what we do; sharing the passion we have for our produce between grower, grocer and chef. Telling our farm to fork story is important, even to those who work in the food industry. We can all feel disconnect in our jobs, so for us, it’s very rewarding to meet the businesses and talented chefs who work and create with our produce. We all share the same attention to detail and dedication to quality.”
Michael Paul, Head Chef of Chotto Matte Restaurant: "Thank you for arranging today it was very inspirational; I'm sure the team will be talking about this trip for a while.”
Andrew Sole, Williams of London (New Covent Garden Market):“Thank you so much to the Tangmere team. An awesome experience and truly inspirational!”
*New Covent Garden Market in Battersea is the UK's leading wholesale market and supplies 40% of the fresh fruit and vegetables eaten outside of the home in London.
